Gasket Materials and Standards

Standards are named by number, not paraphrased. Select the compound by media and service temperature, then confirm the flange or enclosure standard your drawing calls out. Dimensional standards govern the gasket outline; ASTM D2000 and D1056 govern the compound itself.

AEM (Vamac®)ASTM D2000−40 °C to +175 °CEngine and transmission cover joints, hot oil-side sealing
FKM (Viton®)ASME B16.21 · ASTM D2000−20 °C to +250 °C continuous to +200 °CChemical, fuel and petrochemical flange joints
NBR (Nitrile)ASME B16.21 · ASTM D2000−30 °C to +120 °COil and fuel flange joints, pump and gearbox housings
EPDMASME B16.21 · EN 1514-1 · JIS B2404−40 °C to +140 °CWater, steam, brake fluid and weather sealing
Silicone (VMQ)ASTM D2000−60 °C to +220 °CHigh-temperature enclosures, lighting, food-contact grades on request
Neoprene (CR)ASME B16.21 · ASTM D2000−40 °C to +120 °CHVAC, refrigerant lines, duty where flame retardancy is specified
SBRASTM D2000−30 °C to +100 °CWater and mild-service static joints
Natural rubber (NR)ASTM D2000−20 °C to +90 °CJoints that also damp; abrasion-side covers

Showing 9 of 9 entries. Dimensional conformity to ISO 3302-1, class M1 to M4 for moulded gaskets and E1 to E3 for extruded and die-cut sections, as recorded on the drawing. Ranges are typical values for the compound family and are not a specification for a particular part — see our technical disclaimer. Non-catalogue sizes and profiles made to print.

03 · MATERIAL SELECTION

Which Gasket Material Do I Need?

Each compound has a distinct chemical compatibility profile and temperature ceiling. Name the medium, the operating temperature and the flange or joint class, and we will tell you which to specify.

EPDM
Temp. Range
−40° to +140°C
Hardness
40–90 Shore A

Ethylene propylene diene rubber, the default for water, steam, coolant and weather-exposed joints, with excellent ozone and UV resistance. The compound most gasket enquiries end up specifying. Not for petroleum oils.

NBR
Temp. Range
−30° to +120°C
Hardness
40–90 Shore A

Nitrile butadiene rubber, the general-purpose industry standard. Outstanding resistance to petroleum oils and hydraulic fluids at moderate temperature, which makes it the usual choice for oil-side flange and housing joints.

FKM
Temp. Range
−20° to +250°C continuous to 200°C
Hardness
60–90 Shore A

Fluorocarbon rubber, the first choice for aggressive chemical environments. Resists petroleum oils, fuels and many solvents at sustained high temperature, and holds a joint where NBR would harden.

VMQ
Temp. Range
−60° to +220°C
Hardness
30–80 Shore A

Vinyl methyl silicone, the widest service range of the eight. Specified for enclosure, lighting and oven-side gaskets. Food-contact and biocompatible grades on request. Poor abrasion resistance — not a wear part.

AEM
Temp. Range
−40° to +175°C continuous to 160°C
Hardness
50–80 Shore A

Ethylene acrylic elastomer. Our signature compound, supplied to Mahindra & Mahindra for engine and transmission applications. Holds compression-set stability where oil, heat and ozone act together — the condition that ends most cover-joint gaskets.

CR
Temp. Range
−40° to +120°C
Hardness
40–90 Shore A

Polychloroprene. Balanced across weather, refrigerants and moderate oil exposure, and the family we reach for when flame retardancy is specified. Common on HVAC and refrigerant-line joints.

SBR
Temp. Range
−30° to +100°C
Hardness
40–90 Shore A

Styrene butadiene rubber. Abrasion resistance at low cost, for static joints in water and mild service. Not for oil or fuel contact.

NR
Temp. Range
−20° to +90°C
Hardness
30–80 Shore A

Polyisoprene. The highest resilience of the eight, specified where a gasket also has to damp or take repeated closing loads. Not for oil, fuel or sustained heat.

EPDM-SPONGE
Temp. Range
−40° to +140°C
Hardness
ASTM D1056 grade to drawing

Closed-cell expanded EPDM to ASTM D1056, classified by type, class and grade rather than Shore hardness — the grade sets the force needed for 25% compression deflection. Specified where a joint has to seal against a large gap or an uneven face, as on C-pillar garnish and cabinet doors.

Lead Times and How We Quote

Margo produces in bulk against OEM schedules. Send the flange standard or the outline drawing, the compound and the volume, and we will quote it. Minimum run is 10,000 pieces per part number, per compound, or quoted against the part where size or complexity sets the economics. Prototype and first-article lots sit outside the minimum and are quoted separately.
